Cunning Tricksters

In this game, a Kitsune asks a person to count a large number of objects, such as grains of rice or leaves, and then the Kitsune will add or subtract some while the person is busy counting. If the person makes a mistake, the Kitsune will reveal itself and laugh mischievously.

Not all Kitsune are mischievous tricksters, though. Some are good and helpful, bringing blessings and protection to those who treat them kindly. These Kitsune are often associated with the deity Inari, as mentioned earlier, and are thought to bring prosperity to rice farmers.
